Cosmetics or make-ups exist since ancient times, and Sumerian men and women – who crushed gemstones and used them to decorate their faces – were possibly the first to invent and wear lipstick about 5.000 years ago. Since then, a lot has changed, and today’s market volume of the cosmetics industry in the US, Europe and Japan is estimated to be more than 70 Billion Euros per year.
Lipsticks are intended to add color and texture to the lips and often come in a wide range of colors and finishes. For a leading manufacturer of cosmetics, Vision++ designed a 2D vision solution which inspects the visual appearance of lipsticks. This solution does not only check for all sorts of shape deviations, but also signals the presence of geometric imperfections (e.g. small bubbles and scratches) and color inconsistencies.
With a fully automated control of each and every product that leaves the production line, important commercial benefits can be achieved. First and for all, the consistent production of high quality products is a must to maintain a high level of customer satisfaction. Also, in case of production malfunctions, production losses can be minimized and expensive recalls can be avoided.
This inspection solution’s features in a nutshell:
- Vision technology: high resolution color imaging with telecentric optics.
- Hemispherical inspection by both several sideway and one top camera.
- Inspection of both global shape and tiny geometric imperfections (size as small as 0.04mm across).
- Inspection for color consistencies.
